Final Fantasy Resonance arrives October 22 — and Famitsu gave it 36/40
Square Enix's first HD-2D Final Fantasy lands on every major platform this week. The first review is in, and so is a rough idea of how long it takes to beat.
Final Fantasy Resonance launches on Wednesday, October 22, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. It is developed by Lancarse and published by Square Enix.
It is the first Final Fantasy built in the HD-2D style Square Enix used for Octopath Traveler and the Dragon Quest III remake — pixel-art characters inside detailed 3D dioramas, paired with classic turn-based battles.
The first score
Japanese magazine Famitsu was first out of the gate with four 9s, for a total of 36/40. According to the same review, the main story takes roughly 20–30 hours, while completing everything pushes the total to around 70 hours.
Try it before you buy
A free demo is already available on PlayStation 5, so you can test the battle system before launch day. On Xbox the game supports Play Anywhere, which means one purchase covers both the console and PC versions.
Why it matters
Launch week is crowded — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 follows just a day later — but Resonance is aiming at a very different player: anyone who misses the series' 2D, turn-based roots.
