Sega pulls Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition two days after launch
Players flagged bugs and AI-upscaled art. Sega apologised, took the remaster off sale and put the original 2011 game back in stores.
Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition came out on October 13, 2026. By October 15, Sega and Creative Assembly had removed it from sale.
What went wrong
Players complained about performance problems and old bugs that were never fixed. The bigger flashpoint was the art: fans shared unit cards that appeared to be AI-upscaled, including hands with extra fingers. Before it was pulled, the remaster's Steam rating had dropped to 'Overwhelmingly Negative', with only about 19% of more than 2,000 reviews recommending it.
What Sega said
In a statement on X, Sega admitted the release fell short of both players' expectations and its own standards. It is working with its development partner to find the causes and deliver improvements. In the meantime, the original 2011 version of Shogun 2 — which had been removed when the remaster launched — is back on sale.
If you already bought it
Existing owners can still play the Complete Edition. Sega hasn't given a date for when it will return to stores.
