Epic reportedly delays its Marvel and Star Wars shooter as it goes 'AI-first'
Bloomberg says the unannounced Disney game slipped from March, and staff were told to stop writing code by hand.
Epic Games has delayed an unannounced shooter featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters, according to a Bloomberg report published on October 12. The game had been planned for March; no new date was given.
The AI shift
Bloomberg reports that Epic is moving to an 'AI-first' production model. An internal email from one of the game's directors reportedly told the team there would be no more hand-written code, and that art would be produced with full AI workflows, guided by human developers.
Epic spokesperson Jake Jones told Bloomberg the company is embracing AI-accelerated development, and that its developers remain the creative leaders of their work.
Context
The project is believed to be part of Disney's $1.5 billion investment in Epic, announced in 2024. So far that partnership has mostly shown up in Fortnite. Epic also laid off more than 1,000 employees earlier this year.
